What Hail Does to a Condenser

The outdoor unit rejects heat through a coil wrapped in hundreds of paper-thin aluminum fins. Hailstones fold and flatten those fins on impact. Light hail leaves cosmetic dimpling; severe hail closes off whole sections of the coil so air can no longer pass through. A system with heavily damaged fins runs longer, cools less, overheats the compressor, and quietly adds dollars to every electric bill. Large hail can also dent the fan grille, bend fan blades, crack the top shroud, and in extreme cases damage the copper tubing of the coil itself.

After the Storm: What to Check

Look at the fins. Stand at arm's length and sight across the coil surface. Hail damage shows as flattened, shiny patches where the fins are folded over. A few small dings are cosmetic; broad flattened areas are a performance problem.

Listen to the fan. A bent blade or dented grille makes a new wobble or scraping sound. Shut the unit off if you hear it — a blade coming apart can destroy the coil.

Watch performance. If the house cools noticeably slower after the storm, the coil is restricting airflow even if damage looks minor from the ground.

Repair, Comb-Out, or Replace?

Minor fin damage can often be improved with a fin comb — a technician straightens the folded fins and restores most of the airflow. Moderate damage calls for a professional assessment of how much coil area is lost. Severe damage — crushed coils, refrigerant leaks, bent fan assemblies — usually tips the math toward replacement, especially on a unit already past ten years old.
